DopeSkool

Philadelphia has served as the birthplace of some of hip-hop’s most talented artists however, in recent years, the number of relevant Philly rappers has significantly declined. It seems like we’re always waiting for the next big artist to come out of Philly. Although it appears that the city has taken a backseat in the Hip Hop arena as of late, there’s always emerging musical talent. Luckily, we just may have found that glimmer of hope in North Philadelphia artists, Devhilly and Derrick Fareal of DopeSkool. This rap duo offers a fresh sound that has the potential to shed some light on the Philadelphia rap scene.

DopeSkool dropped their first single called, “Juice,” on Monday and I must say it was pretty impressive. The track produced by Philadelphia natives, Roach Carter and San Waters, offers an old school feel and a chill vibe that will have your head bobbing all the way through.

The song begins with an awesome transition from the infamous lines of Bishop aka Tupac in the classic crime drama, Juice, to the beat drop. Devhilly’s smooth, chill voice floats effortlessly over the beat, while Derrick Fareal brings a more energetic flow in the second verse. Both rappers show lyrical chops as they tell of their experiences and who they are. Their laidback style of rap and lyrical content is refreshing proving to be much different from the aggressive sound we’re used to hearing from Philly hip-hop artists. “Juice” is only DopeSkool’s first single and is already capturing the attention of listeners. More material from them is definitely something to look forward to. You should look out for another single dropping soon! In the meantime, keep an eye on these two cool kids…they might be next up! #KeepDopeAlive
