Album Review: 'I Decided.' Solidifies Big Sean's Top Spot in Hip-Hop
This past weekend, Big Sean released his much anticipated fourth album, 'I Decided.' The project received predominantly positive reviews, as it produces a diverse selection of musical sounds, relatable content, and witty lyrics indicative of Big Sean's unique style.
Prior to its debut, Big Sean released two singles from the album titled, "Bounce Back" and "Moves." Both tracks show Sean's ability to deliver radio hits, while preserving lyrical prowess. These two singles also introduced his audience to what may already be considered Big Sean's best work.
'I Decided' takes listeners on a 14 track journey through self-reflection, motivation, and relationships told from the perspective of Sean's present and future self.
"The concept of the album is this is me and this is an older version of me," said Sean on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. "I feel like life is about about making right decisions at any point, or the wrong decisions. So the album is basically like having that wisdom of an old man while you're young and going through life and figuring it out."
The value of life lessons and self-reevaluation are prominent themes throughout the album, which is strongly emphasized in the mesmerizing track,"Halfway Off the Balcony." In Voices in My Head/Stick to the Plan, Sean channels self-doubt into self-reinforcement reminding himself and his listeners to stay focused on what's important, despite the many distractions that may arise.
One of these distractions includes relationship struggles. Due to his highly publicized relationships and breakups, Sean is no stranger to opening up about his love-life with songs like, "Jump Out the Window" and "Owe Me".
Family relationships is also a recurring theme throughout the album. In "Sunday Morning Jetpack," featuring The-Dream, Big Sean paints a picture of childhood memories and reminisces on the time spent with loved ones. Sean also pays tribute to his mother in "Inspire Me", a song that expresses gratitude for all that she has done for him throughout his life.
‘I Decided' also features collaborations from other big-name artists. R&B super-producer, Jeremih, lends his vocals on the resilient and inspirational track, "Light", and Jhene Aiko serenades on the sultry, "Same Time, Part 1." Big Sean also teamed up with rap trio, Migos on "Sacrifices" and hip-hop heavyweight, Eminem, on "No Favors."
The album concludes with Big Sean expressing his undying dedication to making his city proud, as he pays homage to his hometown of Detroit in,"Bigger Than Me", another reflective and motivational track featuring Starrah and Flint Chozen Choir.
'I Decided' is currently headed to number one on the Billboard Charts and is completely deserving of the spot. Big Sean consistently delivers clever bars, impeccable flow, and a distinct charismatic style that undoubtedly makes him a top-contender in the hip-hop arena.
