SZA: CTRL. ISSA VIBE AND I LIKE IT

Don’t you just love Breakfast Club interviews? Even if you are not a fan of Charlamagne Tha God's infamous blunt and vulgar dialogue (which I totally am), you have to appreciate the results of his nature of questioning. These interviews allow viewers, fans, and listeners the opportunity to develop deeper connections to artists, which may ultimately lead to a greater appreciation of their music.

For instance, earlier this morning I watched SZA’s Breakfast Club interview and I absolutely loved it! SZA, the neo-soul, R&B artist signed to Kendrick Lamar’s “Top Dawg Entertainment”, discussed her debut album, ‘CTRL’, which just dropped on Friday. Throughout the interview, SZA gets personal and shares stories about her family, past relationships, and inspirations behind the music on the album.

The opening track,“Supermodel”, sets the tone for the album’s exploration of confidence, vulnerability, and female empowerment. Songs like “Drew Barrymore” express moments of insecurity, while more audacious tracks like “The Weekend” (my personal favorite) explore the perspective of the “the other woman.” SZA’s distinctively sweet, raspy vocals paired with raw and uncut content creates a conceptually brilliant body of work. 'CTRL’ is sexy, outspoken, unapologetic, and deep.

Ladies, this album is for us, especially us young women in our twenties. “The twenty-something” era can be a crazy, confusing period of time in our lives, especially in 2017. Finding love and security in a generation obsessed with big, fake plastic butts, side-chicks, and “situationships” remains an extremely frustrating process. Fortunately, SZA’s new album channels our feelings, frustrations and experiences into an intensely creative and conceptual vibe for the summer.
